Puranjana lost count of time; days looked like moments and children were born to them, though he was Fifty, his love for his wife and children became ten-fold. He performed yagas and yajnas; but one thing he was not conscious about. Old age, the unwelcome guest to the body of a man in love, came to him and came to stay for good.
Chandavega was the name of a Gandharva chieftain. He had 360 powerful servants, fair in colour. They in turn had 360 women to attend to them of dark complexion. Chandavega attacked the city Bhogavati, the snake Prajagara with five heads, who guarded the city tried in vain to protect the city from destruction. The fight went on for 100 years and the Prajagara could not withstand the onslaught.
All this while, the Puranjana was so lost in his love for his wife that he did not spare any thought to what was happening.
KALA, the Time, had a daughter named Jara. Unfortunately, she was not attractive and no one wanted her. She approached Narada and so many others; no body took her for a wife. Finally, Yama told her, Nobody will accept you willingly; I suggest you to creep on people without being their being aware of it. I will team up with you. My brother, Prajvara also will accompany us. When people are unheeding, you and Prajwara will creep on them and I will do the rest.
The three travelled together, bent on destruction. Their army was made up of men called Bhaya. During their wandering, they came upon the city Bhoagavati and attacked it.
When Puranjana was unaware of it, Jara entered his body and gained complete control of it. He could do nothing about it. The city was also invaded by Chandavega.
Puranjana found out that he was now being treated with indifference by everyone, including his wife; too weak to indulge in love as he used to. His city was falling to pieces under his eyes, yet he was helpless. Prajvara approached him and in its wake came Bhaya. Puranjana was really distressed. Prajagara, the guardian of the city, could not fight anymore. He wanted to leave the city, but Puranjana did not want to let him go. Finally death came to him and claimed Puranjana. With his death, the city of Bhogavati fell to dust and nothing was left of it, except the name.
Puranjanas last thoughts were of the woman Puranjani, when he died and so in the next birth he was born as a woman. He was born as the daughter of king of Vidarbha and was married to Malayadwaja, the king of Pandya.
In course of time seven sons and a daughter were born to them. When he became old, Malayadwaja Pandya left the kingdom in the hands of his sons and went to seek peace in solitude. His wife accompanied him. He performed penance and soon gave up his body having realized the Brahman.
Vaidarbhy then collected wood and placed on it his body. She made up her mind to ascend the funeral pyre alongwith her husband (sati). While she was weeping, moaning and preparing herself for the last journey, a brahmin came to her side. The Brahmin was Avijnyatha, the companion of Puranjana, long long ago. He stood by her side and said who are you?, whose wife are you? You are mourning the death of this man who is lying in the funeral pyre, who is he? What is there between you and him that you should weep for him?
Vaidarbhi stopped crying and looked at him in bewilderment. The Brahmin continued my friend, try to think, dont you remember that long ago, long before you got involved in samsara, you had a friend called Avijnyatha? There seemed to be spark of recognition in the eyes of Vaidarbhi. The Brahmin said :-
Forget this man and misery you are going through, because of his death. You do not belong here. Come with me and let us be happy once again.
You are neither the man who married Puranjani nor the princess, Vaidarbhi who married Malayadwaja Pandya. It has all been an illusion created by yourself, because of your ignorance of your real nature.
Puranjana who is now Vaidarbhi, looked at the Brahmin with more recognition and waited for more words from him.
You are neither Puranjana, the lord of Puranajani, nor are you the wife of Malayadwaja. The ATMAN is without sex, and it has no attachment. You are the reflection of me in the mirror. It so happens that the mirror has become clouded as the result of avarana and so you are under the illusion that you belonged to the body. The body was so easily destroyed by Chandavega, another name of Time. Destroyed by old age, which is Jara and Prajwara which is embodiment of all diseases put together. You are now rid of all of them. You have forgotten the truth about yourself. Now you are now one with me and let us go back to the Lake where we used to float together, the lake of MANASA.
