Cricket World Cup 2003
Part I: The Story so far
First World Cup - 1975
Winner - West Indies
Venue : England
Each innings contained 60 overs instead of 50 overs being played at present. India was led by S.Venkataraghvan. The match against England is notorious for the 36 not out scored by Sunil Gavaskar, who justified it as a match practice. India won only one match against East Africa.
Second World Cup 1979
Winner : - West Indies
Venue : England
India was once again led S.Venkataraghavan and lost all the matches played.
Third World Cup - 1983
Winner : - India
Venue : - England
India was led by KapilDev whose 175 against Zimbabve was the turning point in deciding India's fortune. India beat England in the semifinal & the West Indies in the finals, in which KRIS. Shrikant was the Man of The Match. Kapil Dev's men defended a small total of 183 admirably.
Fourth World Cup - 1987
Winner : Australia
Venue : - India & Pakistan
India was led by Kapil Dev. In the semifinals India lost to England at Mumbai & Pakistan to Australia in Pakistan. The final was played in Calcutta where Australia outplayed England to lift the Reliance Cup. The earlier ones were Prudential Cups.
Fifth World Cup - 1992
Winner : - Pakistan
Venue : Australia
South Africa made its entry in world cup cricket and has been a force to reckon with right from the beginning. But in spite of their best efforts luck has evaded them every time. In this cup they were done by the peculiar rules governing the rain affected matches Imran Khan led Pakistan and donated the money he got to the Cancer Hospital he built in Pakistan. India was led by Azaruddin and had to console itself with the victory it scored against their arch rivals Pakistan.
Sixth World Cup- 1996
Winner : - Sri Lanka
Venue : - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
West Indies & Australia refused to play in Sri Lanka. India beat Pakistan in the Quarter Finals at Bangalore but lost to Sri Lanka in the Semi Finals, resulting in ugly scenes at Eden Gardens Calcutta India was led by Azaruddin, South Africa's entire efforts to win the cup was nullified by one great innings by Brian Lara - West Indies had the misfortune of losing to Kenya.
Seventh World Cup - 1999
Winners : - Australia
Venue : - England
A new set of rules were formed by which the points scored in league matches were considered in the final league matches. This played with the fate of the various matches. India lost to Zimbabwe which proved costly. However through their wins against Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan & England India qualified for the super six. However it lost to Australia & New zealand and made its exit. For the third time India was led by its non playing Captain Azaruddin. The unlucky South Africans lost to the Australian by 1 run in the Semi finals. Australia had a very easy win against Pakistan.
Part II: Eight world cup 2003
Venue : South Africa - Zimbwawe
Winner : ?
14 Teams are participating 44 matches will be played over 43 days. The teams are divided into 2 groups of 7 teams each to play their league matches among themselves.
Group A - Zimbabwe, Namibia, Australia, Pakistan, India, Holland, England,
Group B - South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Canada, Kenya
The first three teams from each group will play the super six matches including too many fresh in experienced teams like Namibia, Holland, Canada etc has robbed the league matches of their competitive aspect. Unless God or Indian Bookies intervene the following teams are likely to qualify for the super six.
Group A | Group B |
| Australia | South Africa |
| India | Sri Lanka |
| Pakistan | West indies |
If the current form of Indians continues in South Africa also, the final four will be possibly Australia, South Africa, India, and Pakistan.
Though all Asians will love to watch an Indo-Pakistan Final at Johannesburg, the chances of India crossing the Semi Final barrier is 50%and of winning the final is 25% if it is Australia. 50% if it is South Africa & 75% if it is Pakistan.
The Indian Team in all probability will be
- Gourav Ganguly ( Captain )
- Rahul Dravid (Vice Captain - Wicket keeper )
- Virendra Sehwag
- VVS Laxman
- Sachin Tendulkar
- Yuvraj Singh
- Mohmmaed Kaif
- Ajit Agarkar
- Harbhajansingh
- Jawagal Srinath
- Zaheer Khan
- Anil Kumble
- Murli Kartik
- Sanjay banger
- Parthiv Patel
- Dinesh Mongia or Retinder Sodhi
The combination of Virendra Sehwag & Sanjay Bangar, who are perfect for each other, remind me of the opening pair of Srikant & Ravi Shastri who brought both the Cup & Audi Car from Australia.
Srikrishna Mangal's IX with batting order Virender Sehwag, Sanjay Bangar, Saurav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohmmad Kaif, Murli Kartik, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan
Positive Signs: - Indian's current form is very good. Ajit Agarkar is regaining both his batting & bowling talents. New finds Bangar & Kartik have given Ganguly many options.
Negative Aspects: - Will Tendulkar a reluctant no. 4 rise to the occasion? Will Dravid the Wicket Keeper & Sanjay Bangar stop dropping catches at crucial occasions? Will Srinath & Kumble make their Best World Cup outing memorable?
Srikrishnamangal's best wishes to the Indian Team in their quest of their second world cup victory.
